UCRF Luweero Volunteers Meet Student Volunteers from Sweden

Uganda Cancer Research Foundation-Luweero Meeting with a students’ delegation from the Mikael Elias Teorebiska Gymnasium University, Sweden on  6th February 2013
On the 6th February 2013 a team of members from the Uganda Cancer Research Foundation, Luweero Integrated Program represented by Mr. Isanga Anthony the Program Manager UCRF and Bro. Anthony Musisi the Chairperson UCRF Luweero, had a meeting at Penial Beach Hotel, Entebbe with a students’ delegation from the Mikael Elias Teorebiska Gymnasium University, Sweden. The students included Viktoria Nicolaisen, Louise Granstron and Johanna Sjoholm.

The Swedish students visited Uganda from 28th January to 10 February 2013 for a cancer study visit.  In their tour, the students visited two schools (one urban and the other rural) on a research to particularly establish how much Ugandan students knew about cancer, their perception of cancer and the prevalence of cancer among youth. In other words, they wanted to establish students’ knowledge, attitude and perception students had on cancer.

In turn, the Swedish delegation managed to meet some of the members of UCRF who were represented by the Uganda Cancer Research Foundation, Luweero team. In the meeting, members discovered that the two teams (UCRF and KULL-Sweden) had similar approaches of embracing the cancer problem.
In the meeting, the two groups shared experiences regarding cancer as viewed today both in Sweden and Uganda. Members learnt a lot from one another with regard to cancer and how students in schools can be assisted to change their attitude towards cancer, and safeguard themselves from preventable cancers today. Important to note, is that there is cancer in Sweden although, there are more efforts there to fight cancer than it is in Uganda.

It was also discovered that the two groups had a lot in common.  It is the wish of UCRF therefore, that we begin thinking of a possible partnership with KULL organization in Sweden and UCRF in the fight against cancer in Uganda and Sweden.

Uganda Cancer Research Foundation-Luweero Integrated Program therefore, requests the students delegation from Sweden (Viktoria Nicolaisen, Louise Granstron and Johanna Sjoholm) to share the experience got in Uganda with their fellow students in Mikael Elias Teorebiska Gymnasium University, back in Sweden.
